When we purchased the home Jan. 08 (almost a year ago) in the sales brochure the fireside gathering option also mentioned a plasma niche in the wall. We loved the idea of the niche because we can put up the Rogers cable box without worries.
Upon our house being framed we noticed we are getting the plasma ready wall. We were thinking they made another boo-boo. So I emailed the DC about the plasma niche (no reply - over a week ago) So now I figure I will bring it up at the Framewalk on Tuesday. However Kevin and I checked our Sales Agreement, and Decor binder and they both say PLASMA WALL.
We obviously over-looked this since we kept seeing the plasma niche advertised all over in the books.
If we had known at the time that it was a plasma wall and not a niche we would've requested the change.
Do you think they will honour our change? I'm (and I don't want to say really) upset, but it disappoints me a bit as they advertise one thing and then change it without notification - and here all this time has gone by and we thought we were getting a niche instead of the flat wall. Now it looks like we will have to Rogers box on the mantle (which I guess it isn't a big deal after all - I was thinking we'd have to put up a shelf)

I dont 'think' they can, since it was in your sales package as a plasma ready wall etc, but doesnt hurt to at least ask.

We as well thought it was a niche, but in the Thompson there is a little shelf built into the wall that I had the wires run to, to avoid the cable box on the fireplace!

I just found out that it would be considered an upgrade to get the niche (even though the sales book states it is.)
However thinking about it, the niche only holds a 37" TV so if we ever wanted to get a larger tv than that we wouldn't be able to. Meh.
Not a big deal as I originally thought, but I dislike their use of wording in the sales book as we didn't notice that it wasn't a niche until now (10 months later - And no time to change it)

Dion, Didnt you purchase it as a upgrade the same time you bought your house cause I know we did! Ours clearly stated what we get a direct vent gas fireplace with jogged foundation, Includes painted Mdf Mantle surround and add plasma ready wall over fireplace with reinforced support behind plasma ready.Includes one electrical outlet and one of the two standard cable outlets.Goes on to mention 2 1/4 inch conduit and saying that the edges will be left roughs so as you have to splice the ends on to connect it to your tv!
Some of the shelves they wanted on my model were too absurd in prices! Does really suck though as any reciever such as Rogers or a bell Sat will have to sit on a stand beside it unless you build one in the wall yourself!

Hey Frank,
Yea we bought it at the same time we purchased the house.
However, in the Sales brochure book it said it was a Plasma niche and not a plasma ready wall. That's where we thought we were getting the niche from all along. Then when we re-reviewed our Sales agreement and decor binder they both state plasma ready walls and the niche is nowhere to be found! (The DC says it's an upgrade that you would have to request)

They seem to leave alot of things unsaid or unclear and the wording in the contracts is designed to cover their butts. If you see something in the model or the brochure and the price is not in the binder and the DC doesn't tell you that you're supposed to request a price how the hell are you supposed to know to do that? Do they think we're psychic? For all we know the price isn't in the binder because it's an included item. That's another thing ... they don't tell you what's included especially when it comes to bathroom and kitchen cabinetry. We didn't know what half of our kitchen was going to look like until the last meeting because there was no complete drawing. We also didn't see a proper drawing of the bathroom cabinetry until the last meeting. Aren't those two of the most important rooms in the house for upgrades? Even from a sales standpoint that would seem to be an important part of the process.
I've discovered alot of things through talking with other home owners and by accident rather than being told by Mattamy.
I don't blame the consultants because I think they are overburdened. There's not alot of time to talk things over with your consultant since they have a limited amount of time alloted to each homeowner.
Homebuilding is a very competitive business and I think the oversights are because there just isn't enough time for them to do everything.
If they had their way we'd all buy granite countertops and be done with it. High profits without the effort!

I Agree KC! When we were designing our kitchen we were gonna strongly go with the chefs kitchen because we wanted the pantry cupboards that went along with it! I wasnt much for the island but was gonna go with it for the cabinets and pantry! Well turns out that when we went to our structural appointment we asked about the pantry and they told us that we could do a custom one for a cost! We chose that route instead of the chef's kitchen but nowhere in our design guide did it mention the option to upgrade to get the pantry in our kitchen!
To me there is really no excuse as to whatever is a option or what they think people will like should be documented with a price in their design guide.
Everything has a price!
Case in point the super shower you put in your basement for your son! Was that in the book? Does everyone know that was a option! Just like mine probrably not!
But when you give the buyers many different options it opens their minds up to different possibilities!

Style, the super shower in the basement was not in my price book. I had to request a custom quote for it. It took forever to get the quote back but I kept pushing for it because I knew how important it was for my son. I gave up waiting for quotes for myself because they took so long but for my son there's nothing I won't do! I also decided to put a custom vertical spa in the basement bathroom for him as a treat when I realized that the $6500 bathroom included a 3 foot by 5 foot super shower which is almost the same size as the one in the ensuite. The 4 foot vanity for the low price was also a nice surprise.
I'm having a custom vertical spa put into my ensuite shower and when I mentioned that to my son he asked me if I could fit one for him as well into the budget.
