Mattamy's Hespeler subdivision boosts region's overall construction stats

CAMBRIDGE -- Aided by the launch of a subdivison in northeast Cambridge, housing starts in Waterloo Region rose 57 per cent last month compared to October 2007.
Construction was started on 99 single homes in Cambridge in October, thanks to the startof a subdivision by Mattamy Homes on the old Forbes Estate at Guelph Avenue and Blackbridge Road.
In Kitchener, single housing starts totalled 44, Waterloo 16 and Woolwich Township 22, for a regional total of 182.
The figures, released Monday by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp., include all of WaterlooRegion except Wilmot and Wellesley townships.
Construction of semi-detached and townhouse dwellings were down last month compared to October 2007, but apartment construction rose after ground was broken on 36 condo units on Westmeadow Drive on the west side of Kitchener.
For the year to date, housing starts are down 3.2 per cent. Work has begun on 2,270 units, compared to 2,346 thus far last year. While single detached starts are up 147 units, the totals are being pulled down by lagging apartment construction which has dropped 259 units.
