For those of you who received an appliance package from GE with your purchase agreement...
We went to the GE design centre in Vaughan yesterday to look at the included appliances (fridge, stove, d/w) and see if we wanted to upgrade anything...well of course, we upgraded everything. The models that are included are pretty much bottom of the line. The give you a credit for the included one and then take 80% of the MSRP for the upgrade, so you actually end up getting a great deal on upgrades.
The only decision I'm not confident with is the refridgerator. I love the idea of the french door fridges with the bottom freezer - I think this makes a much better use of space and it allows you to see everything in your fridge and store large trays easily. The problem is, very rarely do you see a bottom-freezer fridge with a built-in icemaker. Growing up, we always had an automatic icemaker and now that I don't anymore, I realize how much I miss it.
So what would you do, get the side by side with a water dispenser and ice maker, or a french door with bottom freezer and no dispenser. Sigh.
BTW the GE design centre was great. Melissa helped us and she was super nice. We loved the stove and dishwasher that she suggested. I'm not sure if it's only the townhouses that got the appliances? Anyway, if you do have your design appointment coming up, you should go soon, in case any of the appliances you order end up changing the cabinet dimensions in your kitchen.
I would absolutely get the bottom freezer. We have a fridge/freezer side by side right now and it's a pain to get large items in the freezer... they are simply not wide enough.

I think you can have the best of both!:)
Within the GE website (http://www.geappliances.ca) the bottom mount freezers are listed as having a factory installed external ice dispenser, (water dispenser also - not sure about the taste, or so I have heard). I also looked at a bottom mount GE at homedepot that had the ice maker inside the freezer. I agree that bottom mount freezers are more convienent than side by side. I would like to find a 25 cu.ft countertop depth freezer that is bottom mount.

Thanks for your replies - I agree - I really like the idea of the bottom mount.
Did either of you get appliances included with your house?

No appliances just some money to spend at the design centre.

No appliances included for me this time around. In my current home I did recieve appliances but did not upgrade them which was a mistake since as you mentioned builders give bottom line appliances. We had to have ours serviced several times within five years and even had to replace the fridge. They broke down at inconveinent times such as Christmas and birthdays:mad:! We were given whirlpool appliances. The service person who repaired our stove recommended GE which is likely what I will purchase this time.

I spoke to the people at the Mabe store in Vaughan and got them to quote me pricing for the appliances that I selected from their website. I then took that pricing to Goemans in and TA Appliances in Kitchener and asked them to match the pricing, which they gladly did. I just felt better dealer with a local vendor, rather than someone an hour away. Also, the service was especially good at Goemans.
I selected a GE Profile fridge that has built in water and ice dispensers, so they are definitely available from GE.
I bought a townhouse....the the GE fridge, stove and dishwasher are included.
What is the process now. Do i just go to the appliance centre in Vaughn and tell them I bought a Mattamy townhouse in Cambridge. Do I then inform the design centre of my decisions on upgrade models when I have my design appointment. Is there some kind of document I need to take from Mattamy to verify appliances were included in the purchase....
Is there a place I can go to in Cambridge or KW where I can pick out the appliances that will be a similar price to Vaughn.
Is it my responsibiltity to coordinate appliance delivery with possession date of townhouse etc.......or does Mattamy handle all of that.
I wasnt going to upgrade the appliances but listening to all your comments I am thinking of upgrading the stove and fridge. I am not sure it makes much difference with the dishwasher.
Does anyone know the price difference from the base fridge and stove to a better quality ones.

Not sure exactly how mattamy does it but i had Great Gulf homes build my current home and I got GE appliances included as well! They were low end basic appliances and I traded in the washer and dryer as I already had a better set for credit and with that I upgraded my stove fridge and dishwasher to black higher end stuff! I had a certificate from my builder saying what appliances were included in the GE series. We went there and a salesman showed us what they were offering us!
I went to midnorthern appliance which is a division of the brick! They asked what my closing date was and they coordinated with my builder our closing date and when we closed they were already delivered and in place! Not sure what mattamy does but pretty sure it will be the same sort of treatment!:)

Have you got your design binder yet? In there is a coupon you will need before you go to the Mabe (GE) appliance centre in Vaughn. Once you have that coupon, just make an appointment and they will take you around, show you which ones are included, and explain to you how to you get credits to upgrade if you want a different model. It's pretty painless. If you do decide to upgrade, you need to pay the difference 90 days before delivery/closing.
We decided to upgrade the stove and dw. The upgrades cost us about $400. We didn't upgrade the fridge because we weren't happy with any of the GE ones. (to get one we wanted, we would have had to pay over $2000 more for the fridge, even with the credit) We got a Samsung from Sears instead (price matched from Goemans flyer - they have awesome deals..). Not sure what we're going to do with our free bottom-of-the-line included fridge.

If it's helpful, I can post the model numbers of the included appliances. Let me know and I'll look them up.
hi,
I got a call today that my binder is now available for me at the design centre.
I will have to pick it up on Sunday and see what it mentions about upgrades on appliances.
I am surprised my binder is ready because i dont get possession until oct 2009.
I guess i will have to think about upgraded appliances once i see the price lists on everytning. I will likely have to make trade offs on my upgrades.....LOL.......
But if I can upgrade for not a lot of money maybe i should be,,,,,
