Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone who has hardwood stairs has considered painting the riser , pickets and stringer white or off white after the fact.

I was going to do it originally through the builder, but it was more money and I figured it would be easier to go from stain to paint than to strip the paint and restain.

Every time I see a show on HGTV, they are always painting the riser etc white. It would be a big decision. I wonder if painted risers is a passing fad....lol

It would be a big decision, it would be great to see someones staircase who did that. Maybe I will have to buy bristal board from the dollar store and cut it out in shape of the risers and see how it would look.......lol

I finally picked a wall colour for my first floor.....now i need to decide if i wait till the year end mark to paint, or fix any issues myself ie nail pops etc........I bought sample cans from benjamin moore and painted 3 foot blocks on the walls to see how the colour would actually look on the walls and in different light. Now with all these colour blocks on the wall I am forced to paint....lol

Hey Jason, I think it depends on how many nail pops you have. If there's tons, let Mattamy fix them ... make sure they sand them down properly and don't just slop on some goop and leave. With your year end being in October they probably won't get around to fixing them til next January, they're so backed up.

If you only have a few nail pops I'd fix them myself and get painting done this spring and summer.

Staircase pickets are a pain to paint. I painted the metal pickets on the porch and stairs at our last house ... it took forever. It had to be done though because the metal had rusted over the years. I power washed the rust off which is another project I regretted starting ... water everywhere!

Hi K.C.

So far I have been lucky, there are no nail pops on the walls, yet anyway. There are only a couple around the ceiling, which I am likely better off to fix myself. My house was likely dry walled last August, so I am not sure how many more nail pops I can expect to get.

People have been painting the spindles and risers for years. It just depends on the look you are going for. I am a painting contractor and have been asked to paint the risers etc many many times. In fact mine are also painted.
