If you're looking for central vac's, here's a link to a listing of retailers in the Cambridge area.

Anybody already have one installed. Any ideas on pricing?

Ours cost $689 (tax in) including toe kick, car kit, and every possible extension/contraption (hardwood, under stove, uphoulstery etc etc.) We got it from VacMaster in Markham and installed it ourselves (not hard at all if you're handy.)

Wow! That's a great deal!!! We paid $711 for ours tax in and got hardly any attachments. We got the hose sock, and the hard floor attachment but did not get teh floor sweeper thingy which looked good and I'm also dying for a toe kick! We got ours from Sears.

Do you know how many airwatts yours is? I think ours is 550...

500 or 550 - I'm not sure.

We got it last year at the home show - one of the first things we bought for our house.

The toe kick is the best.invention.ever.

Did you install it in the garage? If so, how did you drill through the concrete wall? (I have a Northridge and haven't taken possession yet, so I don't know the construction details yet).

So my real questions are:

1. What make and model did you get?
2. Did you install it in the garage and was it easy to get through the garage wall
3. How did you install the toe kick. I assume this is in the kitchen under a sink or cabinet.

Thanks,
Julius (Ph3 Lot 102)

Hey Julius,

Simon (my husband) works in concrete so I'm sure he has tools and ways of drilling through concrete as that's what he does every day. When the time comes if you're planning on installing in your garage then I'm sure he can give you a hand to figure it out.

1. Canavac 399-LS (520 airwatts)

2. We paid for Mattamy to extend the rough in to the garage. This way my husband just had to mount the unit and connect the hoses. Sorry, that probably wasn't the answer you were looking for.

3. In our kitchen layout there is a bank of drawers between the range and the refrigerator. We just removed the bolts attaching it to the fridge gable (easy since the fridge wasn't delivered yet), cut the caulking along the lip of the counter top and pulled the whole unit out. The hardest part was drilling through the tile, though even that wasn't too hard. Then the connection is made in the ceiling of the basement to the pipe. The toe kick has a flexible hose so it wasn't too hard to feed through the floor. The cabinet base board is really easy to remove and cut with a jigsaw.

I should mention, I didn't do any of this...I'm just describing what I watched my husband do :)

This is Babymaeby's Husband

I wish I had not paid for it to be extended to the garage because there is always an area between the floor and the concrete where the joists sit on. just buy a 2 1/2" hole saw to get through drywall and maybe plywood. As for the toe kick there the location was where my wife said I used a angle grinder and a diamond blade to cut a hole in the tile then hole saw through the plywood. Next use a jig saw to cut out template in the cabinet toe kick (removes easy just a few plastic clips that pull off) and mount it next get a flex hose from home depot and use a gear clamp to atach to toekick vac pan. then as you put it all back together push flex hose down through the hole. and then it is just pvc piping after that.

Any Questions just ask.

Thanks Josh and Nicola.

I will try to get a look at the back of the garage (Northridge) to see if it is easy to get a plastic pipe down to the basement for the central vac. I would prefer not to have to drill through concrete. Also, I should check our purchase agreement to see if I ordered the extension to the garage. If I did, that will solve all problems!

Well, I got lucky. I DID purchase the rough-in central vac to garage upgrade. That means I can just go and buy a unit and install it myself :) Makes life easy!
