Hello Everyone,

As some of you may be aware, we are not supposed to put up any fencing for about 2 years due to any grading issues that may arise.

That being said, this is not possible for us as we have a dog that loves to run (far and fast!) and not having a fence up will encourage him (I think he has a hearing problem as he doesn't like to listen to us calling him to come back! lol)
Jen from the DC suggested we get that hideous orange skiing/construction fence to put it up temporarily but I think it is just too ugly. (And I don't know where to get it from) I don't want to pay and arm and a leg for a temporary fence either.
I haven't checked out any costs for chain link yet, but I was wondering what others are going to do.

Eventually, I would like to have a nice sturdy wooden fence but I don't want to put it up with the possibility of it having to come down at our expense.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Personally, I wouldnt risk putting it up either... and think the orange fence might not be sturdy enough from the ones I've seen they are typically leaning and just generally flimsy.

What about just going with a stury hook in the ground that they sell at Pet stores and have a nice long chain to it that wouldnt go past your line? I know it kind of sucks for the dog but at least would be able to roam the same distance as it would with a fence up and not run the risk of running away.

not sure of other fencing options though...

Hey Justmed,

My boyfriend suggested that also (That's what we have at the cottage for him)
Convenience sake, I would like to be able to just open up the door but I think I may have to resort to that.

The only thing is, my poor dog get excited/nervous when we put the leash on him and pees... so we have to leash him outside to avoid him springing a leak on our floor... ugh

With our house in Oakville, it took 3 years for the city to assume the land. BUT we regret not putting up a fence earlier. Ideally if you're closing next summer, you can't put one up. BUT, the following summer just do it. We are. If you go through at least one spring and a fall, you'll be good as the grading issues should be sorted out by then. If there are issues after you put up a fence, it's not like they'll come in with a bulldozer and tear it down. They'll try and take it down peacefully, but you're responsibility to put it afterwards. We'll be putting up a fence Summer 2010 for sure. We're not waiting again.

I'm bumping up this old thread as it's becoming a reality again that I need to focus on getting some type of barrier for my dog. I have 1 week til closing to go and would really love some suggestions.

For 50ft of chain link fencing that's 4ft high is coming around $1,200 - $1,400 and I think that is wayyy to much to spend on something "Temporary"
Fast Fence will rent the same amount for $32.50 a month (Plus taxes) provided we take delivery from them ($400 extra) If we pick it up ourselves (which I am thinking of doing!) then we will the save the delivery charge but the rental per month fee goes up to $35.00 plus tax. This equates $420 a year before taxes. At the end of the rental they pick it up from you.

Hi Smarysexystylish,

We too, have a dog. So this will be an issue for use too. My sister lives in a newer development. One of her neighbours choose to fence despite the grading not being finished and ended up with his fence being torn down at his expense. Because there is a path beside our home we only have to fence the one side. I hope to chat with the neighbours about our dog and see what they want to do. It is a bit of a pain not being able to fence, isn't it?

Hey Phase 4 Greenway!

Yea, it's a pain not being able to fence lol.

I'm only looking for a fence for a partial amount of my backward just because it's so much to fence the whole thing.

I just want to open the door and let him run outside and not visit the neighbours lol

dont know your feelings on it, but what about those underground pet fences?

think I've seen them from 2-300 bucks for the system.

Hey Guys,

We too have a dog (a yellow lab - named Wendel). We moved into our current home brand new and got the dog before we were able to put up a fence. We used the orange construction fencing with metal posts and that seemed to keep him contained and was relatively cheap, but he was just a little puppy at that time. Don't think we are going to do that this time around, we are just going to use a rope for now at least until we get grass.

I was thinking about that but does it really work? If so then that would be an excellent investment as I wouldn't need to worry about putting up a fence!

Aww I love labs!! Cute name too :)
We thought about the orange construction fence too, but I think my dog is smart enough to jump over or get through it as it's not too sturdy! If he was a puppy still then I would definitely do it lol
I don't think my dog will like just being on a rope. Plus I am trying to avoid "leashing" him at the door as he will pee inside. (And I don't want to have to go outside to leash him)

we used quite a few of the metal posts and used the heavy duty ties to connect the fence to the metal post, so it was quite sturdy, only about 4 ft high. Did the job we needed at that time, I don't think he could clear that fence today if he tried.

Ive never used one so Im not too sure... I saw them at Home Depot the other day when we were looking at tiles so I remembered about them.

Really? And you're lab would be bigger than my cocker spaniel, so mine wouldn't be able to jump it then either. Where did you get it from if you don't mind me asking?

I've seen them before too but I didn't pay too much attention to it as I never knew if it worked or not. I think Wal-Mart carries it also. May have to check it out.

I think the way they work is training them, and eventually they dont go near the borders.

Think if its just 2-300 bucks (Home Depot had 2 different models) it would be an option, as long as your dog is trainable. My moms would never learn, lol.

Hmmm I don't know if mine is trainable LOL
Well he will do anything for food so maybe he'd learn that way :)

What do you think of this site: http://www.discountfence.com/snowfence/wooden_sand_snow_fence.htm
Kevin showed it to me the other night and it's in the states. I'm going to call and get some quotes on shipping but It still seems way cheaper than anything I've gotten quoted locally. And it looks decent compared to ski/construction fencing (Not bright orange lol)

That would be more appealing to the eye. Can't remember where we got the orange fencing - it was 9 years ago ! I am sure you can get it at home depot or at least they may be able to tell you where you can get it.

Yea, the link I posted above is way more appealing to the eyes!
Hopefully shipping isn't an arm and a leg lol

If your concern is just for quick washroom breaks then just fence off an small portion of the yard to act like a kennel. It will also make clean up easier. Then take your dog for a walk in order for it to get it's exercise. That shouldn't cost much to fence.

another random thought... but maybe post something in the MIlton forum?

surely there has to be somebody who figured out the best way and has resources after experience.

Yea, I plan on fencing just a portion of the backyard for the above purpose.
Then he will get his normal nightly long walk in the evening for his exercise.

Good thought justmed!

I will definitely do that :)
