For those who haven't closed yet, make sure to record the gas usage from the meter on the day you close. UG didn't do this for me and then they "estimated" it, needless to say they UNDER-estimated that amount, and thinking that I used an enormous amount they sent me a bill for almost $250... for 2 weeks of usage in a 1700 square foot energy star home with no fireplace, no gas range and only 1.5 people living in it. They looked into it and sent me an updated bill that was reduced by a grand total of... $39. I'll be calling them again.

When I move in on Tuesday, I can give you what my opening reading is...it should help in estimating yours.

I think when we moved in, 1700 sq ft home thompson, our gas read around 600m3. Not sure if that will help.

Mine was estimated at a little over 600m^3 but then on Feb 3rd it was over 1200m^3 which ended up being almost $250 for 2 weeks. My parents house is just 200sqft smaller but is 10 years old and they had 4 people in it in and for all of January they paid under $150.

Greg,
I've recorded our usage when we moved in just in case. Do they expect us to pay for the useage prior to closing? I'm sure we'll be having a bill come in soon :s

They are still being a pain about this. Can anyone tell me what their average usage was for the month of January? I moved in on Jan 14th and for the period between the 14th and Feb 3rd they figure I used an average of over 19 cubic meters of gas a day which is astronomical seeing as its an energy star Thompson with no fireplace or gas range and 1.5 people living in it.

I know this may sound stupid, but I've never owned a house before or had to pay for gas, hydro or water. Where do we find the meter for the gas? I know the water meter is in the basement, that is what the hydro company told me and the hydro meter is outside, but where is the gas meter? When I called them to set up my account, I asked them if I should record anything when I moved in and they said they would do it, however, sounds like they don't.

Let me know,

Hey Greg,
Just pulled out our first bill from Union Gas. Our daily use for 2 working people in a thompson (just over 1700 sq ft) for the month of February was 12m3. Union gas' estimation for our meter was about 45 m3 off from what I recorded on the first day we moved in.
Our house is not energy star.
We have a fireplace, it was used during this time but not much.

Let me know,

Its on the side of the house near the hydro meter! If its a townhouse it would be at the front of the home. Ours is right next to our hydro meter although lower to the ground on the side of your house that is wider between you and your neighbour!
Gas is charged in cubic metres! The hydro meter is a smart meter Im pretty sure!

You got your bill already? Odd. We moved in a week before you guys and haven't received it yet. Hopefully it comes soon. I don't want to get billed a huge amount if it doesn't show up for a couple months :(

Thank you. Thats in line with what I had for Feb (11m^3). Their 'estimation' of 19m^3 is ridiculous, and thats down from their original estimate of 23m^3!

We got our first bill this week and they have charged us $73.29 for 35 days. They said our daily usage was 4 m3 and the starting point they used was actually 5 m3 more than I read on the meter the night we took possession. We used 148.503 in 35 days (our house is only 1140 sq ft though.)

I thought this was pretty good, especially since we used our fireplace a lot as it was the first month we had it and the wiener dog loves to bake beside it on chilly mornings after her walk.

Anyway, I'm relieved now, especially after expecting a fight after reading this thread.

That's incredible. I wish my bills were like that. I mean, at 1700 square feet the house isn't a palace or anything, but the gas usage is so much higher. I have no idea why.

Hmmm....maybe it's the 2 shared walls? Our furnace doesn't have to work as hard I guess.

That would make sense, yes.

I'm just uneasy, my bills are much higher than anyone I've been talking to and it seems strange.

Hey Greg, I'll look at my bill when I get home and see what it is. Ours should be very similar.
