View Full Version : Hardwood installation

They're installing the hardwood in my place right now and when I stopped by they had the dining room partially laid out, but not actually installed. I noticed that it doesn't appear that they are using felt paper under the hardwood. Did anybody else noticed whether or not it had been used in their place? They also have stained the staircase the wrong colour. It doesn't come close to matching the hardwood. I know that they say that "exact match not guaranteed", but they could at least make an ATTEMPT. :p
EDIT: I've added a picture of the stairway staining vs the hardwood staining.

To me it doesnt look like anything more then natural oak colour maybe a liitle darker, but nothing even close to your hardwood! Are you sure they added the stain staircase in your upgrade list!:)
Hopefully they will get it resolved!
they still may have to stain it as well but it looks like its been varnished as well!

What?!? There is no way that is even close to the same stain....someone screwed up. I agree it looks like the stairs were varnished only...let us know what you find out.
That's going to be an expensive fix.

That's pretty much exactly what happened. They've only but a clear stain on the stairway (like a lacker finish) and on the stairway going down to the basement. They're going to have to fix both.
I used to love our design consultant and think that she was great, but I'm quickly learning that because of her, several mistakes have been made and I'm growing more and more irritated by it.

I would definitely get intouch with her and her manager asap!!! Those are mistakes that just shouldn't be happening!!! There's no way that there is a stain on the stairs. It only looks like there is varnish!! Good luck with it, I'm sure they will fix it promptly!!!! Keep us posted on how everything turns out for sure!!!

I know exactly how you feel. We had so many mistakes on our contract we had to void the whole thing and start from scratch. We had done everything in writing via email so there was no excuse for errors. One day I showed up at the design center and said I'm not leaving until somebody talks to me. I didn't care if they had to bring in somebody from head office ... they were going to fix their mistakes before it was too late. We even got a copy of every voided item (all 42 pages) so that they couldn't come back to us later and say that we didn't cancel them.
We had them merge the two different contracts they use so we could use a spread sheet program on them to find errors. Also we told them that the way to avoid errors was to put like items close to one another instead being all spread out on a 42 page document.
It drives me nuts when someone exhibits an air of confidence and then you realize it was undeserved. I'd rather deal with someone who is obviously incompetent ... that way I know that the burden is on me to make sure everything is right.
Hi,
I hope they get your stairs fixed!
It concerns me a little to hear about mistakes that can be made. But it is also a good heads up. I will be going to the construction site every weekend checking on everything once they start building.

curious... what design consultant did you guys have?
we've had no problems with Jen, but havent had much correspondence since there was little wrong... so far
I'm going to try to get to the site twice a week now because they do so much so fast when you are within 2 months of closing. I'll go once on the weekend and once on a weekday so I can go into the construction office. The construction guys are great ... the problem is sometimes they are not given proper instructions from head office.

The problems start when you are upgrade crazy like I am. They don't allow enough time for the people who want alot of upgrades. This is where they make their money so they really should get it together.

Thats not to say we havent had issues...
alot of our upgrades were small but they added up to about 26K... some things have been missed but corrected pretty quickly.
All in all I guess we've been lucky:)
Thats brutal with the stain, how would the workers not pick up on it?

Some people purposely choose not to have the rails stained because Mattamy charges so much for it. They choose to go with natural to get the contrast against the dark kitchen cabinets. But usually that would be someone who doesn't have hardwood floors. We opted for natural because combined with the Next Step rail, the cost to stain it would be about $2K which is not worth it in my opinion. We have no hardwood floors and our tile is a light color so it works out.
It's freezing cold out there and I wouldn't expect a worker to contemplate why someone would do such a thing. They probably were given wrong instructions.

I'm not going to say who we had, because I'm not about to call someone out for things that have been done incorrectly, when I can't be positive whether or not it was her fault. Sorry.
So here's the update...
I stopped by this morning, after dropping the girls off at daycare, and went in to see what was going on in the house. I mostly wanted to talk to the hardwood guys and find out why they weren't installing any felt paper under the boards. I went in and nobody was working on the house at all. On my way out, Dave (the one with the beard) was on his way up to the house. He asked if I was the owner and when I said that I am, he said, "So did you notice that they messed up the stain on your stairs?". "Funny you should mention that..." He said that they had noticed the error and he was having the painters come back in to repair it today. Pretty good, I thought. I also asked about the felt paper under the hardwood and he said that they use a wax paper, rather than a felt paper underneath. He said that with the engineered floors and the way that the floors are fastened down, that we shouldn't have any issues with squeaking.
I was pretty satisfied with my visit by the time that I left. Dave had actually offered to go into the house with me, if I wanted to walk around and discuss any questions that I might have, but I had to get into the office. I might call him back and ask if I can book a time with him to go through the house.

OMG I am so special!
I didn't realize there was 2 pages in this thread and missed your update completely :)
I'm glad that everything is getting resolved and leaves you feeling happy/satisfied. That was quite the error. But now you can look back and just laugh at it.

Cool. That's one thing that Mattamy has going for it. The constructions guys are great.

Well that is pretty impressive anxious_f!! Firstly that they noticed before you brought it up, secondly admitting to their mistake and thirdly offering to take you through the house to answer any questions. That shows that they want to rebuild your confidence in the job that they are doing and that they truly do care about the work they do!!! I'm really happy for you and I hope the repairs turn out nicely. D

Stopped by the house this afternoon and they have finished re-staining the stairs. It looks much better now...very closely matched. They will have to send the painters back in to repaint the walls now, because the ones that did the stain, got it everywhere.
I think all we're missing now is a kitchen, plumbing fixtures and carpet.
Here are some pictures of the redone stairs.

Are we able to know the consultant? I am going to try and avoid problems. Especially ones like this where i need to wait! :p
