View Full Version : Water Softeners
I am looking at getting one in asap, I would prefer to rent or rent-to-buy rather than to buy outright. Does anyone know of a good place in Cambridge or KW? Much appreciated, thank you.

How do you find the water? I'm guessing it's really hard since you want on asap.
I have heard from numerous people that it's terrible and we would need one also. I didn't know there was "rent to buy" options out there, and I think I may also be interested in that too.

My Step father is a plumber and the guy that he always recommends and differs business to is Tom Gowing Plumbing. Tom is a really good and honest guy and I have dealt with him in the past. I'm not sure what options he has for financing because he's a smaller operation, but like I said, he's extremely knowledgeable, friendly and honest. His number is 519-658-5552. If you get voicemail, be sure to leave him a message because he's really good at returning calls.

Hey Greg,
Did you have Culligan in? What did they say and how were the prices they quoted you?
The hardness is 26 grains, which is quite high.
I got quotes for 2 of their systems, one for 4-5 people for about $2500 and one for 2-3 people for about $2200. This afternoon if I get some time at work I'll be calling the other places that have been suggested, I also have a Hearth & Home guy coming by today at 5 to give me their prices.

Hey Greg,
I have a guy out of Brantford that will do much better in price then the quotes you have received. I don't have the info on me but before you make a decision make sure to call this guy. You might even get an reverse osmosis system (RO system) anchored in the price he gives you, which would be an asset for sure.
Regards,
Geoff
I'm calling a bunch of people, if you got a number for him I'll add him to my list.
I ended up getting a 40,000grain GE model from Dome Depot that I will be installing myself. Its a good unit with a large capacity at a much lower costs that any of the quotes I have gotten.

Those Magnetic So Called Softeners only break down calcium which still leave lime so they don't work effectivly.

Hey Just a quick bit of advice.
The Softeners You purchase from the box stores are not NSF Rated. The reason behind this is they are braught in off shore so they use the cheapest parts possible to sell for the cheapest price. The life expectancy on water like cambridge will only be about 5 or 6 years. Also for warranty issues you get a 1-800 number. I can get you water softeners comparable to the price but much better in quality which will give you at lot better product for your money. If you want to compare products call me and i don't mind doing so.

Can you show me where you found that information? Because the ones at Home Depot are GE and are certified by the NSF
http://products.geappliances.com/MarketingObjectRetrieval/Dispatcher?RequestType=PDF&Name=49-50182-1.pdf
So you might want to check your facts about that.
Also, they are approved by CSA which is the only thing that matters here in Canada.

LMAO...Ouch. If your wife made you edit that post, I wonder what it originally said?
I would have to agree, however. The reason that bog box stores can sell them so inexpensively, is because they buy such incredible volumes of product. In fact, I am less weary of Home Depot and Rona than I am about some small "water specialist" places. As I've mentioned before, My step father is a plumber and for some time had someone on staff (a plumber) who's specialty was water system (drinking water and water softeners). This guy warned me that Water Depot is the WORST place to buy a softener from. They, in fact, import cheap off-shore product and rarely stand behind it. I would more concerned with that than a product made by GE. I understand that you (Peter) don't work for Water Depot and I'm not trying to make any comparisons. As with anything, the consumer just needs to gather their information, do their own research and make a good decision.

I agree everyone can make the decisions for themselves. If you take the valve apart on the ge units you will see that they are using offshore parts as well as take some of the Cat-I exchange resin in the unit and have it tested by a lab they will tell you the quality. I am just trying to offer millpond a good product at a great price thats all... So good luck with the decisions.

Just to clarify, I am a Colts fan so don't get mad at me.
Also, I am not critizing companies that offer installation and warranties, like Culligan. They're good, but they're more expensive. If you're looking for full service and no worries, go for it.
But if you want to save $, then buying one yourself from home depot is not a bad option.
That's why it's good to do your own research and decide what's best for your situation.

We Sell the Clack Product which is distributed by a company in Barrie. If you research it clack is a very good company who has been around for a long time. I have offered to match pricing on these units to the ones home depot and sears units but offering a better warranty 7 years on the valve and 20years on the tank. plus you don't have a 1-800 number to call if there are problems. We offer service as well as we have a full showroom in brantford for you to come see if you would like. We sell about 30-40 units a month as well as we service and sell commercial equipment so our buying power is very good.

Thanks for replying, the GE one at Home Depot is around $550 for a 18k grain tank. Will you match that? Do you have something similar?
Will you let me carry out at that price or do I have to go with you for installation?
Also If I install it is it covered under warranty?

I would match that size for 550. I would however suggest you go with a 30,000 grain for 699 which will be more efficiant for you seeing the size of the houses. This 30,000 grain unit will last 20-25 years with no problems it is a great price. Let me know when you are looking to purchase. and yes you can install it, as long as its done right you wont have any problems with warranty. It also comes with a bypass valve and the sweat kit ready to install.

By W-Pex, do you mean wirsbo? I don't think the houses use wirsbo fittings. I think we have ez-pex fittings, but I'm not 100% sure since we don't have possession yet.
No matter what, you need a special tool. Either a crimper (for ezpex) or an expander (for wirsbo)
deonandlindsay
02-27-2009, 01:29 PM
Yes I believe Wirsbo is what they're talking about when we were told at Home Depot it could be W-Pex. We called the building office and they said it was W-Pex but from the instructions we were given by Home Depot on how to tell the two kinds apart I do think it is I-Pex.
I was going to rent the crimper from Home Depot to do the I-Pex if that is what it is in our house.

don't take the risk in renting the crimper and making a mistake

I don't know looking at Culligans prices they are absurd and therefore won't be going that route. There are alot of choices when it comes to watersofteners but more doesnt always mean better in my books.:) What I mean is just because I spend $2500.00 on a water softener it doesnt guarantee me happiness. Sure you may get better quality or maybe not!
I have read reviews on the GE water softeners from Home Depot and they seem favourable. I also see that Lowes has a Whirlpool Gold Water softener line in their stores 40,000 grain at 838 plus tax. Not bad in my opinion and also seems like it has good reviews.
I will more then likely go that route and buy from a Box store only because they are cheaper, but the reason they are cheaper is that they buy in BULK so they can offer the unit for that price.

Agreed. We bought one for $589 from HomeDepot and Josh installed it himself. They come with a warranty and I'm much more comfortable dealing with Home Depot's customer service should something go wrong.

We werent able to get in this weekend. It was all locked up 100%! Wish we knew that before we headed out from brampton, but I guess thats a good thing! A few more weeks and I will be home!:D
With a water softener as well!:)
First thing you should do is make a sign that says "I already have a water softener, go away!" and stick it on the door as soon as you move in ... like before you even put the key in the lock.

If only that were enough. That's just we we said to a guy who had already stopped by twice, and then he had the nerve to offer to come back in a few weeks to test our water. We were like buddy take a hike already. They don't give up. Brutal.
