Hi,

I saw another staircase pic on the Milton discussion board. So i thought I would post it.

I really like this look, i think i will do this in my Southgate End townhouse as the staircase is the first thing you see when you open the door.

I wonder if that is a Vienna stain on the tread or it could be darker......

I love that staircase :)

I think it looks like the same stain that we got (Maple Vienna)?

hey JRB you better surely be inviting me over for the football game if you are going all out on this pad of yours!

But a all oak staircase does make a huge difference and provides a instant focal point in most homes!

Hi,

The BIG question is ......do you like the look of the stairs and pickets ALL stained....OR do you like the look of the white riser and pickets and stringer...with the rail and tread stained.............LOL

That Vienna stain is beautiful .......

GRRRR why do you have to make it tough now LOL

I like them both equally I think... but maybe leaning towards the white risers, pickets and stringers (depending on the answer below lol)

- Stupid newb question... Will the white on the stairs discolour (get dirty) or will it be easy to maintain?

Hi,

Good question on the white on the stairs...............LOL

So if we assume it wont get dirty, or that i can always repaint.............which would you go for............LOL

The paint stain combo is about 400.00 more i think......it is a little over 1300.00 and solid stain is likely 950. or close to that.....LOL

I need to do a survey i think.....LOL

Hi Style,

Well i am tyring hard to have a budget....LOL...........I plan to stay in the townhouse for a while, so I want some nice upgrades..............

Which stair case do you like better, all stained or with the white pickets, riser and stringer....LOL

In the townhouse the staircase is less dramatic, it doesnt curve.....LOL......

Personally, I'm a fan of the all-stained look.

A nice runner down the middle can always finish off the look later on, too.

Nothing wrong with wanting to spend the money Jason and spice up your place after all A HOME is what you make it!

As for me personally I prefer the all oak one colour way which is a darker colour to hide some of the natural imperfections in any wood product! So i would personally go the all dark route myself!

Having said that my wife saw your picture and loved it and if it was her choice she would strongly consider the white and dark look as it does add a touch of class, however she said it would probrably also be alot more maintenance with the white as it would show any dirt or imperfection as well! So its 50/50 in our household, but in the end I won out and we are going with the all dark route and match the stain to our hardwood!:D

i wish you the best as it is a tough choice! Are you going Oak or Maple! I prefer oak and it shows the grains very well! Personal choice

Wish you the best of luck with your tough decision and hopefully you will ultimately be happy with your decision! Although I think you cant go wrong with either choice!

Haha I think the stairs with the white adds some "wow" and "awww" factor but I wouldn't want the maintenance of keeping it clean/fresh looking (Ie. If you have to paint it every X amount of time - I don't know how easy/difficult it is to maintain)
So the all stained one colour may be my choice after all. (Unless I hire a maid who paints LOL)

I'm on the fence about a runner. I like the look of just the stairs by themselves without the runner. But then again, it would be wayyy too slippery for me so I would need the runner lol.
But I think the hardwood stairs in the DC with the painted pickets, risers and stringers with the runner looks really good (And I am more of a "dark hardwood" fan!)

I agree with you on the hiding imperfections part :) Especially since I'm picky and the smallest thing would drive me nuts (Ie. Tiles that aren't straight)
I am more of a Maple person. I prefer not to see the grain (My personal choice)

Someone (I forget who) at the design centre pointed out to us that maple hardwood (especially with dark stain) shows every little dent and ding really easily. We have two girls (3.5 years and 13 months) and we know that they're going to drop toys and bang things off the floor. We liked the look of maple better, but decided to go with oak because of the durability.

Hi STyle,

I am going with the oak floor, probably the 3 1/4 width in the Vienna stain.

I am going with Oak because it will hide scratches better than the maple.

So all first floor will have that except the kitchen. In addition, in the upstairs hallway i will use hardwood but carpet in the bedrooms.

I may use white pickets, risers etc....to lighten up the stairway. It might be too dark with everything the vienna stain. I think it depends in part how much natural light and indoor lighting is in the area. I hope the contrast with the white will look great. Cupboards will be the matching monterry in cocoa.....like a lot of other people...lol

A friend has advised me to do it all in stain because if i didnt like it I could then paint the pickets etc white. But it would be harder to go from white on risers and pickets to a stain after the fact. In addition all stain is about 400.00 cheaper.

Now i need to decide the staircase post....lol.....I like the victorian newell post nut i also like the standard picket as opposed to the square ones. I never see the standard picket with the victorian newell post. The standard post is not my favorite, but i may have to use that..

You going with the 3/4 inch depth or width! I went with the 2 1/4 by 3/4 inch as it is a solid floor and with the 3/4 inch thickness it can be sanded down and restained again down the road! If you get a thinner thickness it will be very hard to sand down and refinish as after one time there will be nothing left!
We went with the bruce dundee oak expresso! We prefer oak as like I said it is more durable for kids and especially small pets as it hides scrathes easier then maple!
Hardwood is naturally beautiful, not to mention a great resale selling feature if you ever pursue that avenue! It adds detail to any home over a plain carpet and will last you for years if you take care of it! Carpet will show its wear unless you go the berber route!

As for the pickets i went with the upgraded R4C railing and 1 3/4 inch pickets as like my current house I like the railing to be a sturdy man's railing and accent the room very well! LOL Must be a mans thing!

Hi Style,

For the floor i will use 3/4 inch thick.....but the Mirage comes in 2 1/4 or 3 1/4 inch width.............

I am thinking of using the 3 1/4 but not 100% sure.......the 2 1/4 would be 500.00 cheaper I think. But, i am not sure. On the Milton discussion board there is a hardwood thread and it was suggested the 3 1/4 width would look less busy.

I also am going to upgrade the rail, but use the standard pickets. I am going to use the R3C rail...........it wasnt that much more and I decided the rail would be permanent ....lol

I am just not sure I like the standard post. I like the victorian newell post but i think it might look funny with the standard picket.

Hi STyle.

When i saw the upgraded trim package [trim package 2] i loved it.

I didnt think it was a bad price, i think 1200.00 for the whole townhouse. I think it will look great with the Vienna Mirage hardwood.

I thought if i am going too pay all that money for hardwood, then i might as well upgrade the baseboards.....LOL

Maybe i should re think the width of the hardwood. Other people I have talked to are using the 2 1/4 width and if i do that i could save 500.00

its entirely up to you! if its a large room then it will look nice but if its a standard room then the 2 1/4 inch by 3/4 inch is more then enough! plus thats a extra 500 to spend elsewhere! Remember also that the hardwood flooring will be installed perpendicular to the majority of the floor joists in the room unless you are gonna pay more and install it on a 45 degree angle!

Its really great that you are considering the addive 'GO BIG Or GO home" as regardless of whether its a semi, town or detached it doesnt diminish the value and beauty that one can tastefully put into ones castle so to speak!

As long as you are there you should enjoy it and truly feel at home and be happy with the choices you made!:)

I agree Style,

I am single and 1509 sq feet for my townhouse will be perfect. A townhouse is a life style choice for me. I want minimal grass. Of course Mattamy lots are small to begin with. In fact, my lot is 84.58 in length. That is bigger than a lot of the single homes. [many of the single homes have a 82 foot length for the yard]

Smaller places can look great. I think the Mattamy townhouse layouts are great!

I want all perrenial gardens...so a smaller yard is perfect for me.....LOL.....
It is unfortunate we have to wait to landscape and put up a fence.......

Good thing we got carpet on the stairs then so my dog running up and down it won't ruin it. We'll have to get him booties to wear around the house LOL

We're putting up a chainlink fence as soon as we move in for the dog, but I can't wait until we are able to put in nice gardens as well as a nice fence :)

Hi,

I like the look of the post at the bottom of this staircase. But, I dont know what it would cost.

I like the "C" shpaed post with the standard picket and with the bullnose step.
It would lokk great i think with the pickets and riser painted white.

Does anyone know the upgrade cost for this style post?

Thanks.

I think it depends on how your staircase ends and if there is enough room... if there is that flexibility for that post. In our old Mattamy townhouse, we had it - no extra cost whatsoever.

Thanks Gagnon777

I would be very happy if i could get that at no extra charge.........LOL

I will have to send an email to my design consultant.

Otherwise, i will use the Victorian newell post with the standard pickets. [upgrade of around 475.00 i think]

Thanks

Jason
