Ok so has anybody gone out to get quotes for central air
for those of you that have an energy star home, you get a Carrier furnace installed by Applewood heating
When you get a central AC installed after the fact Tarion voids your furnace warranty, the way to get around this is to install the same brand AC as your furnace, and then the manufacturer takes over your furnace warranty
so far 2.5 Ton Carrier comfort 14 SEER is 3900$ installed
I am still looking for a group buy for June 2009, PM me if you are interested

I agree. I think whoever is giving them this information is running a scam.

Sorry Alex, but I'm with the gang... that's waaayyy tooo expensive for what you've been quoted. And Tarion cannot cancel your warranty on your furnace with an A/C after installation. We never had that issue with our last house.

one thing for sure when I went thru the homes the furnace has a sticker saying the warranty is void is this unit is altered
3 different people have told me about the warranty thing, so I don't know what to believe
I also had a quote for a Lennox XC15 14 SEER for 3200$ now or 3500$ (2009 Model) in May

If you read most contracts from builders, they state that if you purchase an air conditioning unit and have it installed after closing, by someone other than their approved contractor, that the contractor could void the warranty on the furnace. The reason for this is that if an AC unit is improperly installed and configured with a furnace, the air conditioner COULD cause damage to the furnace thermostat. You do not HAVE to get a matching brand AC unit to go with the furnace in order to maintain the warranty. You do, however, have get it installed by an approved vendor and installer. I would just check directly with Mattamy to inquire what their policies state. If they say that it will void the warranty, then ask where it explicitly stated, in writing. If they cannot provide you with a document, then they would have a hard time trying to void the warranty on the unit, as long as you get the work done by a qualified installer and vendor.
Some other builders that explicitly state that the Tarion warranty is voided, if the AC is installed by an unapproved contractor.

Alex, when we bought our home one of the things that the salesperson suggested we do to save money is not get the air conditioning unit from Mattamy. She said just get it later. They seem to be aware that their air conditioning is overpriced. She said that's what alot of people do. She said nothing about warranties being voided. I'm sure Mattamy would make a point of mentioning it if it was an issue.
The prices you have been quoted are as bad as what Mattamy charges. You should be able to get a much better air conditioner and for alot less than what you've been quoted.
We're having our basement completely finished as soon as we move in and Mattamy confirmed that wouldn't void any warranties either. If they have to tear something down to resolve a water issue we would be responsible for any additional charges to rebuild whatever had to be torn down. However since we are doing a no drywall basement and the basement bathroom is being built by Mattamy any additional costs will be zero. Our walls are going to be built with waterproof panels and we will have a drawing of where all the plumbing is so if we find any wetness we just pull down the panel, have Mattamy fix it and we put the panel back up again.
The only thing I would want to make sure of is that whoever installs the air conditioning is reputable so they don't do anything stupid near the furnace area.
I would never give my business to anyone who used scare tactics to sell an overpriced product.
I believe Costco has a deal with a company for air conditioning and I plan to get a quote from them closer to the summertime.

keep in mind that the prices I posted are for high end air conditionners
they all are less than 70db sound
I am still going to look around, I might go with the installer's of the furnace applewood heating

I will sit on the fence with this thread! I will not pay that kind of money for a air conditioner ever! I will explore Shauns business first but regardless Alex does have a valid point! I can tell you for a fact that my current home which was built by great Gulf Homes made it perfectly known that IF I chose to BUY a Central AC unit after market meaning after I closed that IT WOULD VOID the Warranty after the standard 2 years for heating and AC! I still did it anyway cause WE werent gonna get fleeced by the builder!
So Alex is right in the fact that most builders do mention this to you. I think it is more of a ploy or scare tactic to get you to buy their over inflated product but still I think it is better to do it after market anyway!
Most Companies are reliable enough to back their own products! Considering i can get a 2 ton unit with puron installed on brackets with a humidifier for like 2300-2400 I WILL gladly Save the $1500 that they are gouging me for!
Besides by going with Shaun it seems like a good deal because ITS not like we dont know where he LIVES! :D ! He will be a member of our community and to me that should be good enough!
But on a Merry note MERRY XMAS to all my future neighbours and look forward to seeing you all really soon!

This might sound like a stupid question. But, did we need to purchase a "rough in" for central air in order for it to be installed after closing? Or is this something that can be installed and not "roughed in?" I really have no idea on what the process is, however, someone told me that we actually had to pay for the rough in, so I wanted to make sure it wasn't true and we can still get it.
Let me know,
We didn't pay for a rough in. There is no rough in for an air conditioner.
Mattamy was selling a rough in for a water softener but I called one of the water softener companies in Cambridge and they told me that was not necessary either.

That's great, thank you. So they automatically have it ready for central air. I didn't think we had to have it roughed in, but wanted to make sure. My boyfriend is very cranky if he doesn't have his central air!!! And that is something I don't want to deal with!

Does anyone know how to change our thermostat to Celsisus?
Also, anyone have suggestions for settings and how to actually program?

I don't have the information handy, but if you go to Honeywell's website, look up the thermostat's model # and you should be able to download 2 manuals: the users guide and the installation guide. The Installation Guide is where the procedure to change it to celcius is.
