Roundabouts not solution

Letters
Nov 25, 2008
When I heard about the suggestion of roundabouts along Franklin Boulevard from Highway 401 to Myers Road, it made me question our politicians.
When will Cambridge council start using some foresight in its planning?

The roundabouts we have now are too small to accommodate large truck traffic. Drivers, in general, are unsure how to act in roundabouts. Not all traffic has the right of way at all times.

Maybe council can tell us how this proposal is going to move traffic quicker and easier along Franklin Boulevard, another bottleneck.

Townline Road is now heavily travelled. Maybe that road could expand into four lanes and continue straight through to Highway 8. That would alleviate some of the traffic on Franklin Boulevard.

With a new subdivision being constructed by Mattamy Homes on the old Forbes property in Hespeler, and another 2,000 vehicles a day heading to the 401, which route do you think they are going to take?

You got it, Blackbridge Road or right through downtown Hespeler, neither of which can accommodate the increased traffic.

Remember, the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, and that’s what will happen, putting further strain on surrounding roadways. Here’s a thought, stop building until finding a solution to safely move traffic.

I don't know, I plan on going north on Guelph Ave and then take hwy 24 to the 401. We did that on Saturday and it seemed faster than Blackbridge.

I guess it depends what end of the development you're at - we are right on the south west side.

Regardless...the fastest way to the 401 will be to highway 24. If you are going to East Toronto on the 401, it would be a bit faster to go through Towline, however only by a minute or two. If everyone were to head that way, it would actually take longer, on account of all the traffic.

Some people just like to complain and this woman is clearly one of them.

roundabouts are the evolution of efficient traffic movement

I love the roundabout at townline road and can amera pkwy, you never have to wait or stop there, is more "green", red light are so inefficient, why would 10 cars stop so that one car gets a green light. not to mention to speeds make them safer since there are no t-bones with 2 cars travelling 90km/h. and it's alot nicer to look at a roundabout with trees and landscaping then a huge intersection of asphalt.

LMAO @ you ^^

Lol The first time Kevin and I went to the sales centre (and I was driving) was terrible with the roundabout!
It was our first time to Cambridge and 1st time on a roundabout (And a 2 lane one at that!). I was sooo confused and when we went to go home we got off a turn too soon and started travelling in the wrong direction! LOL I'm talented.

I've gotten used to it since then and have no problems on them now. I actually kinda like them. Again the whole no stop and wait thing is what I like. I hate pulling up to red light or stop sign lol

The bigger ones in Ireland and the UK certainly take a little getting used to... what with going the "wrong" way and all. Once you do get used to them though you wonder why they have any of our more familiar intersections at all. As long as people know how to use a round about they work fantastically well.

As long as people know how to use a round about they work fantastically well.

But they ALL have to know how to use one. The problem is most people are not used to roundabouts and they're either too timid or too aggressive.

In India there are super crazy roundabouts with a cop in the middle. I wouldn't want that job! Actually I wouldn't want to drive there at all ... you need to be a race car driver to drive there!
