Hi Southgate owners,

Are you all leaving the island in the kitchen or are you choosing the alternative kitcehn layout......no island.....

Have any of you gone to the design centre to look at hardwood colours, cupboard etc.....just curious what you picked for that model.

Hey Brian,

I cant seem to make my mind up about anything..........LOL........

I will probably leave the island I think it is a nice feature............

I am still trying to decide hardwood floor colour and cupboards.....

I know everyone likes dark cabinets but i am not sure..............I might use the hardwood that the Greenway model used, and a cinnamon cupboard, travertine counter, and tumbled marble backsplash......

I'm going to the model homes to take some pictures soon so I can get a better idea of a color scheme.

The Island is cool because you can add-on more Counter space if there is room to do so or a wine cooler ect…

Hardwood in the kitchen?
Pro's? Con's?

GO WITH DARK!@% lol

Sara likes light and I like dark

Hardwood in kitchen........

Hardwood is softer to walk on..........if a glass falls on the floor it will not likely shatter [ perhaps a consideration if you have pets or kids]

Tile can be cool to walk on...............

In our model there is a garden door, so I want to be able to walk in and out with out having to worry about tracking in dirt and snow on hardwood......

I am repalcing tile at garage door entrance with hardwood.............i think it will flow better into the great room that way.............and make the great room feel 2 feet bigger.....LOL

Check out the hardwood in the Greenway model.....I may use that.......it is dark, but not as dark as the dark choc brown that everyone seems to want to use.................It may be a good compromise for both of you..........

I am just wondering if people use the dark choc brown floor if they will be too limited in furniture colour, wall colour etc................The floor in greenway model will go with any colours of walls and furniture....

Let me know what you think when you tour through the models again...

You can't walk on hardwood in high heels because it will leave dents which will not be covered by the warranty.

I have hardwood in my kitchen. I thought it was a brilliant idea when we got it but you have to be sooo careful not to drop anything on it. When you have to move the appliances i.e. for cleaning behind them you risk denting the floor if you are not super careful.

Also hardwood is slippery if you polish it too often.

Since the patio door opens into the kitchen you have to lay down a cloth so you don't drag in any snow which over time will damage that part of the floor.

One thing I discovered having hardwood in the kitchen is that ants love eating it. They come in from outside since the kitchen is right off the backyard.

Hardwood does look nice but I prefer very low maintenance flooring.

I'm giving a big "NAY" to the hardwood in the kitchen idea...

We have it in our kitchen now and lets just say that we can't wait to get rid of it. Anywhere you have water in the room-bathroom or kitchen, you should essentially have a waterproof floor. Sure hardwood looks nice in a kitchen with nice expensive cabinetry, bottom line is its just not practical. I know I wouldn't put hardwood in my bathroom...lol.

Gotta stick with tiles in the kitchen for sure.

hi,

I think I will keep the island.....................

I think it might actually provide more counter space..Otherwise there is a chunk of counter top that may not be easy to access......[the corner part of the L]

If you have lots of people over, the island will give good space for people to hang around.

Only disadvantage i can think of is I am not sure how crowded it will look between the great room and kitchen with the island. Would that space look more open with the L shpae counter.

I was wondering if the island could be turned................but not sure that is a good idea either......

Either way, pot light rough in above the island is an upgrade, I will definetely be doing it....LOL

I believe a kitchen island is more convenient in regards to entering your kitchen as well as its appearance in the kitchen. An island is far more attractive than an L shaped kitchen considering you can dress it up well including some pendant lights above. Also, I believe it increases the value of your home when and if you want to sell it in the future. Make of what you want of it but also keep in mind that you want to keep the appeal a little global to help your home sell later on.
