Anybody know if we are even permitted to fence in our backyard.
Answers seemed to be vague and differing depending who and when you talked to them
Anybody have anything concrete?:)

Dont know! usually you have to wait at least a year for the city to sign off on the land after the final grading is complete! Ive seen people put up fences sooner but if there is a grading issue and your fence is in the way! It comes down at your expense!
Also takes like almost 2 years to get your grading deposit back from the builders!

I was told before we purchased that yes, we definitely are allowed to fence the backyard. That would have been a deal breaker if we were not. The condo agreement is only for 'common areas'. Maintenance people will have no reason to enter our backyards (they will not be cutting our grass) , so we don't have to provide access. That's how I understand it anyway.
We may have to wait a year or so before the grading gets approved and the town gives the go-ahead.
Hey, I just noticed we'll be backyard neighbors - well, a few down from you anyway. Nice to have you here.

I don't know if the same thing applies to townhouses or not, but Jen had told Kevin and I that we would have to wait at least 2 years to put one up. I said I couldn't wait that long as I have a dog and she suggested putting up that orange construction plasticy fencing... UGH!
I think we'll wait at least a year before we put ours up. We've talked to a couple people and they've said they waited a year and when they have put it up they haven't had issues.
Again like others had mentioned, it's regarding the grading and stuff. So it would be your expense to take it down and reconstruct!

Yeah, we have the same issue - our dog is not going to want to wait 2 years to play in the backyard! She is little though (dachshund) so we might put up some short temp fencing which I'm sure will contain her...if our neighbors don't mind :)

Hey peoples!
Wow I didnt even realize that this avenue of communication was available to us! Well we've officially moved in yesterday and am realling "looking forward" to all the unpacking! hahha
We're in the townhouses on Owl street. As far as fencing goes, you can put up a fence whenever you want but as some of the people have alluded to its a lot better to wait just in case any grading work has to be done or fixed. Also, the just as new homes always settle and shift, so does the landscaping! Much safer to put up a temporary fence for now and put up the real one in ATLEAST a year, better to wait two.
Looking forward to contributing on this forum as I was born and raised in Cambridge :) Im sure I have a lot to learn as well though!
Happy to be home :)

Welcome to the forum and welcome to the neighborhood. We're on Blackbird - we might be backyard neighbors depending on what side of Owl you're on...
I agree that we're better off waiting until next year to fence - but for now I'd just be happy with grass.

as for the fences we're going to wait... see if we can get all the adjoining houses in etc.
We want to do some kind of patio first, as there isnt really an avenue to get back there

Justmed we're actually just a couple of houses down from you! I believe we're lot 4-5 (southgate end). I was speaking to Ninder yesterday and he said they'll get the grass in this week hopefully. They wanted to get the first phase of the driveways done this week as well but looks like cause of the chance of rain tomorrow etc that will have to wait. Also, the row of townhouses on blackbird and owl that havent closed yet are closing starting today and should all be closed by the end of next week I hear so they should get the roads pressure washed by august.

that sucks. Huge pain to be parking in the street and moving the cars in the morning. Hopefully they can get it done.

I have BBQ's in my garage all the time :D

Update: All the Southgates in Phase 1 got wooden decks today.
They removed the concrete stairs and built tiny little decks with railings. Does anyone know why? Was it a code thing?
OK maybe not all of them, but the 3 I can see from my backyard did.

the ones I can see did too... was watching them work as I worked from home today.
Ninder says grass next week, then driveways the week after
saw him sitting waiting for somebody today.
